ESCALA has a particular interest in the theme of Indigenous America in its collecting and research, which has developed from the Collection’s inclusion of the rich diversity of artistic traditions in Latin America, including those of the region’s present-day indigenous and pre-Hispanic peoples. ESCALA investigates these artistic traditions and contemporary artists whose practice engages with them, as reflected in the Masters module 'Collecting Art from Latin America' offered by ESCALA in the School of Philosophical Historical and Interdisciplinary Studies. ESCALA’s research interests intersect with those of staff and students in other disciplines, including Sociology, Human Rights Centre and the Essex Transitional Justice Network.
