The ‘University Space’ at firstsite is currently ESCALA’s main display space, while building works are taking place at the Albert Sloman Library. firstsite

The University of Essex is a partner to firstsite, the contemporary arts organisation in Colchester town. Firstsite’s impressive building, designed by Uruguayan-born architect Rafael Viñoly, includes the 'University Space' where ESCALA holds three exhibitions a year. ESCALA and firstsite have collaborated since 1994 and continue to develop artist residencies, artwork commissions and education activities.

Wivenhoe Park and University Quays

Wivenhoe Park, the landscaped former grounds of Wivenhoe House provide the setting for three ESCALA sculptures as well as others owned by the University of Essex. There is an additional ESCALA sculpture at the University Quays, a student accommodation complex near to the river Colne.

Albert Sloman Library

The Albert Sloman Library displays a small selection of artworks from the Essex Collection of Art from Latin America. The Library also houses other artworks belonging to the University. Unfortunately, children under the age of 16 are not permitted to enter this building for health and safety reasons. For opening times of the Albert Sloman Library please follow the link below.
