BOTáNICO, 2008

The Essex Collection of Art from Latin America commissioned Cinthya Soto to produce 'Botánico' for ESCALA Artist Editions, established in 2008. This initiative covers the artists' production costs and, where appropriate, includes an element of professional development. All proceeds are returned to the artist and to the Collection to support its activities and further editions.

About the artist

Cinthya Soto (b. 1969 Alajuela, Cost Rica; lives and works San José de Costa Rica and Buenos Aires, Argentina) created this edition during a residency at the London Print Studio. 'Botánico' belongs to a series of photographs taken at the Botanical Garden at the University of Zürich, where Soto studied film. The photograph plays with the idea of the presence and associations of the tropics in a cold climate, an idea that Soto inverts in photographs taken in her country of origin. Soto studied architecture, fine arts and photography in Costa Rica but her preferred medium is painting, which inspires her composition and use of colour.
