Guido Llinás (1923 - 2005)

    On Pintura Negra

The name of this work is Pintura Negra (Black Painting), a name that is, one could say, generic. It is one that I have used whenever the colour black is more evident than others, frequently in the 1980s and 90s.
Because I am myself black, by race, this title has created a certain confusion. My intention is not militant. For me black and white are as much colours as are red and blue, just as some paintings are named Pintura Azul (Blue Painting), where that colour dominates. At the end of the 1990s, I started to name certain works Elegias (Eulogies); these are paintings dedicated to friends who have died and they are also Eulogies for Havana, destroyed: for me almost dead, assassinated.
